Lyski - a charming piece of land
The great advantage of the commune of Lyski is the location surrounded by forests. The agricultural areas and a considerable share of forest areas are the distinctive features of this land in the map of Upper Silesia.
As compared with the typical Rybnik surroundings of industrial and especially mining landscape (dumps and mines), our commune is a truly charming piece of land. The agricultural landscape, forests, animal sanctuaries, old trees and ponds create a unique atmosphere, perfect for establishment of tourist and leisure facilities for the inhabitants of the Rybnik Industrial Region.
The commune of Lyski is one of the cleanest places in the Silesian Voivodeship the proof of which is its abundance of flora and fauna. There arę numerous legally protected species of plants and animals to be found within this area. The river Sumina flows through the commune and its whole section within the area of the commune is the second class purity water. It is full of various species of flora and fauna very rare in the basin of the Silesian Voivodeship. It is to be stressed that the commune of Lyski lies within the area of the landscape park of "Cistercian Landscape Compositions of Rudy Wielkie".
The commune is also well known of its natural and scenic features. Willing to promote them even more, it was decided that biking routes will be estaished enabling tourists on bicycles to visit all interesting places of the region. Direct contact with the nature can persuade anyone that it is worth setting off to the biking route to reach one of the tourist attractions. Under this project, a brochure entitled "Commune of Lyski by Bicycle" was prepared providing the readers with a short history of the commune as well as its individual villages.
There are numerous organisations operating in the commune in collaboration with the local authorities. They include the society of village housewives, local sports clubs, voluntary fire brigades, associations for the commune revival. As a result of their co-operotion, a new custom has been introduced into the local community's life: organisation of events, picnics ond feasts gathering people from other regions as
well. It is also worth adding that numerous periodical events are organised every year in the commune of Lyski, such as: the "Rock Magie" music festival, football tournaments and fishing contests for the award of the Lyski Commune Leader, fire brigades' contests or the harvest feast.
Before the EU accession as well as after Poland became the European Union member, the commune of Lyski undertook a wide range of actions aimed at ocquiring various financing sources from the European funds. Consequently, numerous infrastructural investments have been performed, such as: construction of roads, sanitary sewage system as well as modernisation of the village centres in Raszczyce and Pstrążna and construction of a sports field in Raszczyce. Our commune, as one of very few communes in the Silesian Province, participated in the Leader+ Pilot Programme. The programme is still developing and its target is mobilisation of civil initiatives and ensuring sustainable development of the whole commune.
